 AcrySof ® ReSTOR ® IOL

Finally, the opportunity for freedom from glasses!

Until recently, life without reading glasses or bifocals was not an option for most cataract patients. You now have an option. AcrySof® ReSTOR® is a breakthrough lens that uses innovative technology to give patients a full range of vision — near through distance — and can greatly reduce their reliance on reading glasses or bifocals. Simply speaking, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is designed to improve vision at ALL distances, and was created for patients who wish to have a full range of vision once their cataract lens is removed.

Distance vision restored through a standard, monofocal lens.

Distance and near vision restored through the use of the ReSTOR lens.

How does it work? As we perform daily activities such as reading, watching television or working at the computer, our eyes are constantly focusing on objects at varying distances – up close, far away and everything in-between. The ability to quickly change focus throughout this range of vision is called accommodation

Unfortunately, this ability diminishes as we grow older (presbyopia), causing us to become dependent on bifocals or reading glasses. However, the AcrySof ReSTOR lens uses an innovative apodized diffractive technology to provide a range of vision. It works like two lenses in one. Combining refractive technology for distance vision and apodized diffractive technology for near vision through a series of concentric rings, the ReSTOR lens allows light from both distance and near objects to focus clearly on the retina. This is something that many cataract patients would otherwise only achieve by wearing glasses. Similar technology has been used for years in microscopes and telescopes to improve image quality, and has now been patented for use in intraocular lenses by Alcon.

  • Apodization is a gradual reduction or blending of the diffractive step heights.
  • This unique technology optimally manages light energy delivered to the retina because it distributes the appropriate amount of light to near and distant focal points, regardless of the lighting situation.
  • Apodized diffractive optics are designed to improve image quality while minimizing visual disturbances. The result is an increased range of quality vision that delivers a high level of spectacle freedom.

ReSTOR RESULTS

During U.S. clinical trials, the results with ReSTOR were remarkable:

  • 80% of patients reported that after lens implant surgery with ReSTOR lenses, they no longer needed glasses or contact lenses to see clearly at all distances.
  • 94% said they could drive and read the paper without contacts or glasses.
  • Nearly 94% were so satisfied that they would have the procedure again.

RESTOR IOL CANDIDATES

Virtually everyone who has cataracts and is in good general health may be candidate for implant surgery, but people with chronic infections, uncontrolled diabetes, or other health problems may have to wait until these conditions are under control prior to surgery.

People who have had prior corneal refractive surgery (i.e. LASIK or PRK) may be acceptable candidates for ReSTOR implantation as long as their eyes are in good health. After a thorough examination, we will be able to better advise you if you qualify for the ReSTOR implant.

If you've already had cataract surgery, you're not a candidate for the ReSTOR procedure.
