Glaucoma Is a Family Affair

Family history increases the risk of glaucoma four to nine times.

Everyone is at risk for glaucoma. However, certain groups are at higher risk than others.  

In a recent study on glaucoma in the well-respected British Journal of Ophthalmology, it was found that:

1. Glaucoma is inherited;
2. Siblingsof glaucoma patients are 5-times more likely to develop glaucoma;
3. The most common type of glaucoma (called “open-angle” glaucoma) has no symptoms and vision loss is usually so gradual that it is not noticed until severe vision loss has occurred.
